EU Population Tops 450.4M in 2025 on Migration Boom

(MENAFN) The population of the European Union climbed to 450.4 million as of January 1, 2025, according to fresh data released Friday by Eurostat, marking a continued rebound following the demographic dip triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The figure represents an increase of 1.07 million people from the previous year, sustaining a four-year upward trend that began in 2022. In comparison, the EU population was 449.3 million at the start of 2024.

Eurostat noted that the "observed population growth can be largely attributed to the increased migratory movements post-COVID-19." Since 2012, the EU has consistently recorded a natural population decline, with deaths outnumbering births, but this has been offset by net migration gains.

Among the EU’s 27 member nations, Germany is projected to remain the most populous in 2025, home to 83.6 million people. It’s followed by France with 68.6 million, Italy at 58.9 million, Spain with 49.1 million, and Poland at 36.5 million. Romania (19 million), the Netherlands (18 million), and Belgium (11.9 million) also ranked among the larger populations.

At the other end of the spectrum, Malta and Luxembourg recorded the smallest populations, with 574,000 and 681,000 residents, respectively.

These latest demographic shifts underscore the EU’s reliance on immigration to counterbalance long-term natural population decline—a trend that has shaped the bloc’s population dynamics for over a decade.
